As the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1/HTC Magic has a special place in my robotic heart – introducing the wonders of the new mobile platform and laying down the foundations for what was to follow.
The G1 wasn’t exactly the perfect device though. The battery was horrible, it stopped receiving official updates and 1.6, and its processor is positively archaic when compared to today’s Android smartphones.
Step forward the G2, a 1Ghz CPU reimagining of the physical QWERTY phone that HTC and T-Mobile hopes to compete against the Droid 2.
The new phone also packs in the current feature-of-the-moment, 4G support, along with a 3.7 inch screen and optical touchpad, as opposed to the horrible trackball on the original
Disappointingly for us G1 owners, the G2 appears to have lost a row from its keyboard and has changed the square for the more publicly accepted rectangular buttons.
The official announcement for the handset is due in the next few days. The phone is currently only confirmed for the US, but we’ll be keeping our eye out for if T-Mobile UK decides to stock it as well.
